Berry Global introduces Omni Xtra+ clingfilm
Iranpolymer/Baspar Berry Global has launched an updated version of its Omni Xtra polyethylene clingfilm for fresh food applications.
The new Omni Xtra+ film will serve as an alternative to traditional polyvinyl chloride (PVC) cling films, focusing on improved performance and sustainability.
Improved properties
The Omni Xtra+ film builds on the existing Omni Xtra, offering features such as improved elasticity, uniform stretching behaviour, and enhanced impact resistance.
Designed for packaging fruit and vegetables, meat and poultry, and deli and bakery products, the film aligns with Berry’s dedication to innovation and sustainability.
The advanced manufacturing process behind Omni Xtra+ enables the production of a thinner film compared to PVC versions without compromising strength and puncture resistance.
The film’s mechanical capabilities meet the demands of packaging requirements, allowing for higher clarity that matches PVC and enhances product visibility on retail shelves.
Benjamin Hendriks, R&D manager at Berry Global Flexible Films, highlighted the significance of Omni Xtra+, stating: “Our Omni Xtra+ film represents a significant technical advance over previous versions, mirroring the performance of PVC in terms of usability and clarity whilst lowering packaging weights for improved yields.”
Recyclability certification and sustainability
A notable aspect of Omni Xtra+ is its recyclability, which aligns with current European recycling guidelines. The film has received certifications of recyclability and compatibility from industry organisations RecyClass and Interseroh, emphasising its commitment to a circular plastics economy.
Omni Xtra+ contributes to Berry’s sustainability goals by providing a weight reduction of more than 25% compared to PVC films.
This reduction, combined with recyclability, supports Berry’s BMore Together initiative and aligns with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Global Commitment, reflecting the company’s commitment to sustainable packaging practices.
Berry said the new film is aimed at meeting consumer demands for sustainable packaging and assisting companies in achieving sustainability goals by avoiding challenges posed by hard-to-recycle PVC films.
