Biobased BOPET Film for Solar Control Windows

A line of biobased biaxially oriented PET (BOPET) film for use in the manufacture of solar control window films for commercial and residential applications is newly available from Toray Plastics, North Kingstown, R.I. The Lumirror brand BioView PET film is produced with Toray’s proprietary sustainable resin blends, which contain approximately 30% renewable feedstock.

The new film’s performance is reportedly equal to that of traditional solar window films during solar film manufacturing, installation, and use in technically demanding applications that require exceptional clarity. Toray’s BioView film is a multilayer structure with surface and optical qualities that are strictly controlled by the company’s proprietary coextrusion technology. It is said to feature very low haze, excellent handling and processing characteristics, and high scratch resistance.

A global leader in the manufacture of traditional films used for solar window film applications, Toray Plastics has been on the leading edge of bio-based resin technology. In fact, the company has plans well underway, with patent pending, for the production of a BOPET film for solar control window film made entirely of sustainable feedstock.
