Recycling: New EU regulations for plastics that come into contact with food

Baspar / Iranpolymer New rules for the use of recycled plastics in food packaging have been in force across the EU since October 10, 2022. There is still a transition period until mid-2023, but a number of plastics recyclers and processors have to adapt to the new requirements now. A guide jointly created by the GKV (Berlin), the BDE (Berlin) and the bvse (Bonn) is intended to provide support, which the industry service Kunststoff Information (Homburg) has now made available for download.

The new Regulation (EU) 2022/1616, which replaces Directive 282/2008, defines, among other things, the rules for recycling processes that have been evaluated by the European Food Safety Authority (Italy). This is intended to help the industry to implement recycling targets, as will soon be required by the new EU regulation on packaging and packaging waste (Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation PPWR).
