{"id":100840,"date":"2024-05-11T14:24:16","date_gmt":"2024-05-11T10:54:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/polymervapooshesh.ir\/?p=100840"},"modified":"2024-05-11T16:19:10","modified_gmt":"2024-05-11T12:49:10","slug":"farrel-pomini-goes-all-in-on-continuous-mixer-technology-for-recycling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/polymervapooshesh.ir\/en\/farrel-pomini-goes-all-in-on-continuous-mixer-technology-for-recycling\/","title":{"rendered":"Farrel Pomini goes all in on continuous mixer technology for recycling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\"><em><strong>Iranpolymer\/Baspar\u00a0 <\/strong><\/em>At NPE 2024, Ansonia, Conn.-based Farrel Pomini is betting on mechanical and chemical recycling applications for its continuous mixer technology.<br \/>\nThe Farrel continuous mixer is a compounder that feeds to an extruder, based on the principle of two counter-rotating, non-intermeshing rotors, and a large free volume mixing chamber. First introduced in 1963, the machine is now adapting to market dynamics of increased demand for recycled plastics and biopolymers.<br \/>\n\u201cWe have high expectations for this fair,\u201d Farrel Corp. President Paul Lloyd told Sustainable Plastics. \u201cIt\u2019s the first NPE in six years, the North American market is very busy, so we expect our business and the show to be very active.\u201d<br \/>\nLloyd sees the fair as an excellent opportunity for \u2018people to come together and exchange their ideas and see the latest technology, which has moved forward a great deal over the last few years\u2019 in the US, particularly for recycled materials.<br \/>\n<span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cParticularly compared to the European market, I think where [the requirement for recycled materials] is a little bit more mature, in the US it&#8217;s been gathering pace over the last two to three years,\u201d Lyoid said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"vlaz4d inline-ad-para\" dir=\"ltr\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">Farrel has been monitoring lab trials in its laboratories in the UK and in the US and has seen \u2018far more\u2019 trials oriented towards recycling in the US than in Europe. That is partly explained by the fact that Europe is a more developed and therefore more stable market, Llyod commented, but nevertheless the rate of innovation in the US is outpacing the old continent.<br \/>\n<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cAround 70% of the lab trials we do now [in the US] either relates to biopolymers or recycling, which if you compare that to six years ago it was probably less than 20%.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">The time for investing in machinery for recycling applications is now, Lloyd argued.<br \/>\n<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">\u201c[Progress in the US] is not just relying upon regulations as you see in Europe, now there&#8217;s real opportunity in the recycling market and there&#8217;s been a real shift in the philosophies of US companies towards opportunities in processing recycled materials. That has allowed capital flow into those kinds of projects which has produced, in terms of rate change [if not final position], more progress in recycling in the US at this moment [than in Europe],\u201d he concluded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><b>A compounder for mechanical and chemical recycling<\/b><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Farrel has made \u2018significant\u2019 changes to its compounder to adapt it for recycling applications.<br \/>\n\u201cThe machine was originally designed for feeding pellets around 3 mm of diameter that very easily fall into the machine. The recycling material we see is usually larger than that,\u201d Lloyd explained.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The company put a lot of emphasis on developing the front end of the machine to face this challenge. Llyoid pointed to the large single-entry feed port to handle irregularly sized feedstocks and large amounts of additives and fillers; nonintermeshing, counter rotating rotors and a large free volume mixing chamber that can tolerate the often abrasive nature of recycled materials.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">For mechanical recycling, irregularly shaped material is fed from a large hopper with crammer options for low bulk density feeding. Excellent temperature control is achieved, in part, by unique rotor geometry and process parameters like adjustable dams, orifice position, and rotor cooling.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">For the chemical recycling process, the continuous mixer is used in the primary stage of the pyrolysis process to heat and melt plastic or rubber. Farrel partners with Texas-based Lummus technology for the chemical recycling of plastic, and with WF Recycle Tech in the UK for pyrolysis of end-of-life tires.<br \/>\nFor plastics chemical recycling, the compounder effectively works as \u2018pre compounder for further recycling\u2019. The input is mostly film scrap, alongside some solid materials to adjust bulk density.<br \/>\nNo special steps are needed to avoid contaminants, Lloyd said. The material goes through a general sorting, cleaning, and granulating process before it reaches the compounder, which \u2018deals quite well with the occasional piece of debris, even the small amount of steel will not damage the machine\u2019, Lloyd noted.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><b>NPE launch<\/b><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The continuous mixer for chemical recycling of plastics is being launched at NPE. It is now available for full commercialization around the world through technology licensing partnership with Lummus.<br \/>\n<span lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cWe expect a high level of interest.
