{"id":2131,"date":"2016-07-24T07:46:00","date_gmt":"2016-07-24T03:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/polymervapooshesh.ir\/scientists-aim-to-convert-plastic-into-fuel\/"},"modified":"2016-07-24T07:46:00","modified_gmt":"2016-07-24T03:16:00","slug":"scientists-aim-to-convert-plastic-into-fuel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/polymervapooshesh.ir\/en\/scientists-aim-to-convert-plastic-into-fuel\/","title":{"rendered":"Scientists aim to convert plastic into fuel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-emphasis-key=\"paragraphAtoAto\" data-emphasis-ord=\"0\" style=\"color: #4d4d4d; margin-top: 5px; margin-bottom: 10px; text-align: justify;\">A team of scientists from the University of California, Irvine, and the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry in China are looking to turn polyethylene into a fuel similar to diesel.<\/p>\n<p data-emphasis-key=\"paragraphTgiTgi\" data-emphasis-ord=\"1\" style=\"color: #4d4d4d; margin-top: 5px; margin-bottom: 10px; text-align: justify;\">The goal is to break the molecules in the plastic down to their original components &ndash;&nbsp;hydrogen and carbon, to rearrange them into a usable form.<\/p>\n<p data-emphasis-key=\"paragraphTtiTti\" data-emphasis-ord=\"2\" style=\"color: #4d4d4d; margin-top: 5px; margin-bottom: 10px; text-align: justify;\">The technique involves breaking down the plastic to a molecular level, but requires three additional ingredients: an alkane &ndash; a cheap by-product of oil refinement &ndash; and the two more expensive catalysts of iridium and rhenium.<\/p>\n<p data-emphasis-key=\"paragraphTpdTpd\" data-emphasis-ord=\"3\" style=\"color: #4d4d4d; margin-top: 5px; margin-bottom: 10px; text-align: justify;\">&#8220;The process does not involve any harmful chemicals and does not create waste products,&#8221; said Zhibin Guan of the University of California, Irvine, one of the authors of the study.<\/p>\n<p data-emphasis-key=\"paragraphIctTrs\" data-emphasis-ord=\"4\" style=\"color: #4d4d4d; margin-top: 5px; margin-bottom: 10px; text-align: justify;\">In current trials, the plastic to catalyst ratio is 30 to 1.
