Bioplastics, for instance, offer unique solutions to the portfolio of sustainable solutions within the plastics industry. Biobased and\/or biodegradable bioplastics, while maintaining functionality and performance standards, can contribute to:<\/p>\n

  • Reduced life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions<\/li>\n
  • Lower life-cycle global warming potential<\/li>\n
  • Diversification of feedstocks for products<\/li>\n
  • Stable product offerings for farmers<\/li>\n
  • Restoration of degraded, polluted land through growth of certain plant feedstocks<\/li>\n
  • Creation of new jobs as the industry segment expands<\/li>\n
  • Diversion of organic materials away from landfill and into compost<\/li>\n
  • Seamless recycling of some bioplastics alongside their non-bioplastic counterparts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    There are also numerous types of bioplastic polymers, offering a wide range for multiple product areas \u2013 from food contact packaging to medical and agricultural applications. Bioplastics are even found in automotive and building applications, as well.
    \nEach year, the Plastics Industry Association\u2019s (PLASTICS) Bioplastic Division gathers those involved in this industry segment to recognise the capabilities of these innovative materials through a social media campaign called #BioplasticsWeek.<\/p>\n

    This event celebrates the accomplishments of those involved in the production, use, and circular disposal of bioplastics. It brings\u00a0awareness to the potential of this relatively small segment to the broader plastics industry. Organizations such as the Plant Based Product Council (PBPC), the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI), European Bioplastics (EUBP), PlastChicks Podcast, and more will be sharing content that focusses on various themes throughout the week. PLASTICS will also announce the annual Innovation in Bioplastics Award winner, recognized for contributing an impactful and novel material, product, or process to the industry.<\/p>\n

    All who impact or are impacted by bioplastics are encouraged to participate in this year\u2019s event.
