working\u00a0on\u00a0the development of new foams\u00a0made with\u00a0poultry\u00a0feathers\u00a0for sustainable hydroponic crop systems\u00a0within the framework of UNLOCK, an initiative funded by the European Union\u2019s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.\u00a0Fourteen partners from seven European countries\u00a0are\u00a0working\u00a0on\u00a0this project,\u00a0which is\u00a0coordinated by Fundaci\u00f3n CIDETEC with the aim of favouring\u00a0a sustainable, circular bioeconomy\u00a0focused on the creation of new value chains\u00a0of\u00a0by products\u00a0such as\u00a0poultry\u00a0feathers, which\u00a0are usually discarded\u00a0or\u00a0underused,\u00a0as a means of\u00a0developing\u00a0rural areas and\u00a0expanding\u00a0their economies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lead\" dir=\"ltr\">The main goal\u00a0of this project\u00a0is to design and demonstrate an economically and environmentally sustainable supply chain for a\u00a0feather-based bioeconomy with the aim of generating bio-based functional materials\u00a0for agricultural applications.\u00a0UNLOCK\u00a0proposes manufacturing bioplastics and\u00a0biotextiles\u00a0from\u00a0feather\u00a0keratin, which\u00a0have\u00a0properties that can\u00a0give\u00a0the final product new functionalities, such as\u00a0a biodegradation capacity adjusted to\u00a0crop\u00a0duration, providing the soil with organic nitrogen,\u00a0not\u00a0generating waste at the end of their life\u00a0cycle\u00a0and being cost\u00a0competitive.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">With the assistance of Terra Aquatica,\u00a0AIMPLAS\u00a0is responsible for the development and validation of one of the project products:\u00a0foams for hydroponic crop\u00a0systems.\u00a0Hydroponics is\u00a0a practice that allows\u00a0vegetables\u00a0to be grown\u00a0directly in contact with\u00a0a\u00a0nutrient\u00a0solution in an environment without soil.\u00a0Polyurethane foams are currently the most popular solution\u00a0for this kind of application due to their low density, low cost,\u00a0and good water retention.\u00a0However, this material can contain harmful chemicals, is difficult to sterilize,\u00a0and is a\u00a0major\u00a0source of microplastics.<\/p>\n<p
