Freepoint Eco-Systems develops flagship plastic recycling plant near Ghent

Iranpolymer/Baspar  elgium – Freepoint Eco-Systems develops a state-of-the-art recycling plant for discarded plastic waste on the left bank of the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal in Belgium. The concession agreement with North Sea Port was signed today.  Upon completion, this will be one of the largest plastic recycling facilities in the world.

The facility will have an area of 10 hectares, currently undeveloped land. It will be able to recycle about 80,000 tons of waste plastic annually. In the future, the project could be expanded to include a plot of land that will recycle up to 160,000 tons of waste plastic per year. The facility in Ghent is the first of several European projects Freepoint has under development.

Freepoint Eco-Systems is currently in the process of sourcing raw materials and financial planning, with the goal of completing the project by the end of 2024. Construction will begin as soon as the permitting process is completed, expected in 2025.

Global strategy

“The announcement of our first European branch marks the next phase in our global strategy,” said Managing Director Oscar Gutierrez of Freepoint Eco-Systems. “We look forward to supporting the European waste management industry and providing solutions for difficult-to-recycle plastic streams. Our plans underscore our commitment to the petrochemical industry in achieving its goal of developing the circular economy and meeting low-carbon resource targets. North Sea Port’s strategic location aligns perfectly with our business model of building circular economy infrastructure at scale with access to superior logistics. This will allow us to better serve our global customers.”
