China: Shortage of supply drives up prices for standard thermoplastics

Baspar / IranPolymer Standard thermoplastics prices in China soared in March amid global supply shortages and firmer ethylene and propylene prices. The supply for most standard thermoplastics was particularly low in the first half of March 2021, which fueled prices. Processors responded to the high price demands with a decline in orders, so dealers were forced to offer material at a lower price level. In stark contrast to the other grades, polystyrene prices initially fell due to the sharp drop in styrene prices on the Asian market. But in the second half of March, PS also turned positive again.

Most thermoplastics are likely to see further price increases in April as stocks are still low – with demand normal for the season.
